If you are looking for a beautiful spot to relax and unwind, there’s no better place than the Junction & Breakwater Trail in Delaware. Located at Cape Henlopen State Park, between the resort towns of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, it offers something for everyone. A few quick facts:

  • You don’t have to be an experienced hiker in order to enjoy the trail.
  • It is a little over 15 miles long and perfect for all skill levels, including children.
  • Most of it is designed for stroller access and wheelchair users.

There are multiple entry points to the Junction & Breakwater Trail, too. You can utilize the Wolfe Glade parking lot on Wolfe Glade Road or from Holland Glade Park behind Tanger Outlets Seaside. Alternatively, there’s Gills Neck Road west of the entrance to Hawkseye Community or Hebron Road in Rehoboth Beach, but neither offer parking.

6 Activities on the Junction & Breakwater Trail

This pine-studded trail offers views of both wetlands, woodlands, open fields, coastal marshes, and corn fields. You will see a little bit of everything, and can also enjoy:

1. Biking

Junction & Breakwater features a mostly incorporated path. The first part is made up of crushed stone, but it is still relatively easy to navigate. Few things are as peaceful and relaxing as biking along and enjoying the best of Delaware scenery.

2. Walking in nature

There’s no better spot in the Penn Central Railroad or Holland Glade area than the Junction & Breakwater Trail. Hikers of all ages can enjoy it, and there are interpretive signs along the way providing educational opportunities. You might spot some wildlife, too, including deer, squirrels, sleek hawks, and snow geese.

3. Running

Park behind the Tanger Outlets, stretch, and hit the path. There aren’t too many obstacles or large rocks along the way, so you should be able to navigate without many disruptions. Just keep an eye out for strollers, dogs, or small children.

4. Walking your dog

Between the pond trail and the forests and open spaces, there aren’t many areas of Cape Henlopen State Park that are better for dogs. Your canine companion will love the dog-friendly Junction. Keep an eye out for woodland animals, however, since a variety of furry creatures have been known to cross the path.

5. Spending time with family

The trail is a great way to spend time in the serenity of nature, plus immerse yourself in history. Check out the railroad bridge, just off the rail trail, that was built in 1913. You can also climb a World War II observation tower, which offers views of the coastal wetlands and is a great spot to stop and take a family photo.

If you are planning on taking young children or dogs out on the Junction & Breakwater Trail, make sure to take supplies such as water bottles, snacks, doggie poop bags, flashlights, and warm clothes. It is a good idea to be prepared for every eventuality, though the trail is just a short distance from shops and restaurants. Bonus tip: Be sure to check your body for ticks after entering any parks in Delaware!
